The Science of the Stone: Why Opals Are Different

Unlike dense diamonds or sapphires, opals are delicate, amorphous gems that naturally contain a large amount of water, typically ranging from 3% to 21% of their total weight.

• Solid Australian Opals are non-porous (non-hydrophane) and highly stable, usually between 3% and 10% in water content.

• Ethiopian Opals are hydrophane (water-loving). Though similar in base water content, they absorb moisture easily, which can temporarily or permanently alter their brilliant fire.

Because of this unique makeup, intense temperature shifts, severe vibrations, and harsh chemicals can permanently cloud, crack, or strip the play-of-color right out of your stone.

The Good, the Bad, and the Dangerous

When it comes to refreshing your jewelry collection, not all cleaners are created equal—especially when opals are involved. Here is how standard methods stack up for solid Australian opal jewelry:

• Ultrasonic Cleaners | The Dangerous ❌ High-frequency sound waves can cause an opal's internal micro-fractures to expand, resulting in crazing (web-like cracks) or shattering. We do not recommend ultrasonic cleaners for opals, emeralds, turquoise, or pearls, and urge caution with any gemstone that may be porous or included.
  
  
• Steam Cleaners | The Bad ❌ Intense heat can cause thermal shock. This dries out the stone's natural moisture and triggers rapid expansion that can crack gems.
  
  
• Ammonia, Peroxide, & Acid Dips | The Bad ❌ Many commercial jewelry dips contain harsh chemicals. These strip the polished finish right off an opal, leaving it looking dull and cloudy.
  
  
• Mild Soap & Warm Water | The Traditional Good Clean 👍 A bowl of lukewarm water, a drop of gentle dish soap, and a very soft toothbrush is the classic DIY method. It's safe for solid stones, though it requires some patience to lift stubborn grime from intricate gold settings.

Collector's Note: Solid Australian Opals can safely be handled in a water bath—just dip, clean, and dry with confidence. However, never submerge Ethiopian opals, opal doublets, or triplets. And always test a small area before performing a full cleaning on any piece.
