The Luster Ritual: A Guide to Jewelry Care & Cleaning

Fine jewelry is a collection of luminous memories, intended to be lived in and loved. Yet, the very elements of a life well-lived—from the lotions we apply to the dust of our travels—can momentarily veil the brilliance of a cherished piece. Establishing a gentle cleaning ritual can help ensure that the soul of your gems and the sun-drenched luster of your gold remain as breathtaking as the day they first spoke to you.

The Art of the Gentle Bath

For the vast majority of your NIXIN treasures, the most effective cleaning method is also the most gentle. This lukewarm soak is safe for gemstones like diamonds and sapphires, and most precious metals.

  • The Solution: Prepare a small bowl of lukewarm water mixed with a few drops of mild dish soap. (Dawn is a good option)
  • The Soak: Allow your jewelry to rest in the solution for 5–10 minutes. This softens accumulated oils without compromising the integrity of the setting.
  • The Touch: Use a new, ultra-soft bristled toothbrush to gently whisk away debris from the stones. Be sure to focus on the underside of the gems and on any intricate galleries of the gold as these are spots that trap dirt.
  • The Rinse: Rinse thoroughly under warm running water (ensure your drain is closed!) and pat dry with a lint-free, microfiber cloth.
  • The Dry: Allow your jewelry to air-dry to completion upon the microfiber cloth. Be sure it does so in a safe location.

Special Considerations: Opals & Porous Gems

While diamonds and sapphires thrive in a soak, more ethereal stones like Opals, Pearls, and Emeralds require a more curated touch.

  • Mindful Moisture: Emeralds and (natural solid Australian) Opals can get wet, but rather than a full soak, give them a minute or two in the bath and then proceed with the rest of the cleaning instructions above.
  • Moisture Evasion: For Pearls, it’s best to avoid a soak altogether and extended exposures to water. Instead, try wiping them with a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt and oils. If needed, spot cleaning with a soft, damp cloth is also an option.
  • Immediate Drying: Always dry these pieces immediately with a soft, dry cloth to prevent moisture from lingering in delicate crevices.
  • Chemical-Free Zone: Never use ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals on any of these gemstones. The opal and its kaleidoscopic fire is best preserved through natural, manual care.

The Final Polish

To restore that signature "glow" to your gold, a professional polishing cloth is an indispensable tool. Unlike liquid polishes, a specialized cloth is embedded with cleaning agents that remove tarnish and restore a mirror-like finish without removing the "human touch" of the hand-sculpted texture.

A Note of Mindful Stewardship: While these cloths are masterful at reviving light, there are a few nuances to keep in mind:

  • Preserving Your Finish: These cloths are designed to heighten shine. If your piece features a soft satin or matte finish, frequent use of a polishing cloth will gradually buff the metal into a brighter, more polished glow.
  • A Gentle Boundary: It is essential that the chemical agents within the cloth remain in contact with the metal only. Please take care to avoid touching your gemstones with the cloth, as these specialized cleaners can compromise the delicate surface and luster of gemstones.
  • The Mark of Time: While a cloth will beautifully restore luster, it is not intended to erase the deeper evidence of a life well-lived. To remove nicks and scratches, a professional refinishing is required to safely restore the metal’s original smoothness without compromising its integrity. *You can always contact us to inquire about servicing a piece.

Frequently Asked Questions about Jewelry Cleaning

Question NIXIN Advice

Can I wear my jewelry in the shower?

We recommend removing your pieces to avoid a buildup of soaps, hard water minerals, and any chemical exposures.

Is toothpaste safe for gold?

No. Toothpaste is abrasive and can create micro-scratches on gold and softer gems.

When should I take my jewelry off?

Before swimming (chlorine is a foe to gold), heavy exercise, or applying perfumes. Use common sense - any activity that exposes your jewelry to blunt force or chemical agents is best avoided.
