It never feels good when things don’t go as planned. In fact, those moments can leave us feeling downright shattered. If you read about our latest creation gone wrong, you know that we mean this both figuratively and literally.
We poured hours into creating the perfect design, carefully choosing each stone…everything was aligned. And then it happened. When it came time to set the opal, it cracked.
We won’t pretend that our initial reaction was anything less than heartbreak. But after several deep breaths, we remembered that for all of the times that something has gone wrong, many, many more have gone right.
These ups and downs are just part of life. A learning lesson. A chance to get it right the next time. An opportunity to find the courage to keep going. And it’s these bold leaps of faith that often lead to even greater successes.
Even those who have failed on a much grander scale, for the whole world to see, have managed to find the courage to keep going. And, you know what? Most people don’t remember them for those low points, but rather for what they got right.
With Women’s History Month coming to a close, we thought it fitting to share Lucille Ball as an example.
Her life was full of crushing experiences. The death of her father at an early age. A tragic accident with a neighbor's child that would plunge her family into financial and emotional ruin. A career path of trial and error. And a failed marriage.
But these low points weren’t enough to stop her from doing what she believed in, nor were the opinions of others. Many said she wasn’t beautiful or talented enough to be a Hollywood actress. And while she may have begun her career as the “Queen of the B’s” (as in second-rate movies), she eventually rose higher than all the movie executives who shunned her could ever have imagined.
Best known for the wildly successful TV show, I Love Lucy, from which she earned five Emmy Awards, many people don’t realize she was also the first woman to own and oversee a movie studio. As head of Desilu Studios, Ball paved the way for women to enter roles that had, until then, been reserved for men, in addition to producing renowned shows including The Dick Van Dyke Show and Star Trek.
Though it wasn’t all success for Ball, it’s her legacy of determination that she is remembered for — and, of course, a comedic talent like no other.
