Is Crystal Opal Really Crystal?
No, Crystal Opals are not crystals.
Opals are amorphous silica rocks that lack formal crystalline structure. Crystal Opals have earned their (somewhat misleading) title due to their diaphanous appearance.
CRYSTAL OPALS:
- Are transparent or translucent.
- Can carry different base tones (ie: black, semi-black, white).
- Are famously mined in areas like White Cliffs and Lightning Ridge, Australia.
Q: Our favorite thing about Crystal Opals?
A: They reach their full color potential when they make contact with your skin. We see them as a symbiotic stone.
ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Opal Necklace FAQs
Are the opals used in your pendants solid or doublets?
NIXIN currently uses solid Australian opals — not doublets or synthetics. Each opal is carefully chosen for its natural beauty and integrity, ensuring your necklace is a true, earthen treasure.
Can I wear my opal necklace every day?
Yes… but. Opals are softer stones, and while you can wear your necklace daily, we recommend removing it before strenuous activity, impact, or exposure to harsh conditions. A little care goes a long way. Learn more in our blog on Proper Opal Care Techniques and Guidelines.
How should I store my opal necklace?
Store your opal necklace in a soft, fabric-lined box or pouch, away from strong light, extreme temperatures, or other gemstones. Keeping it separate helps prevent scratches and preserves the luminous surface of the opal.
Do your necklaces come with chains?
Yes. Every NIXIN pendant arrives on a solid gold chain thoughtfully selected to best complement the individual opal and design. Chain length is noted in each product description.
What is a “picture stone” opal pendant?
A picture stone is an opal whose play-of-color creates a scene—waves, skies, or a dreamy horizon. These natural artworks are collector favorites and signature to the NIXIN aesthetic. Learn more in our blog post on opal picture stones.
Are your necklaces solid gold?
Yes. All NIXIN Jewelry necklaces are handcrafted in 14k or 18k solid gold. We do not use gold plating or fill, ensuring your piece offers both beauty and heirloom-level craftsmanship.
How can I prevent my chains from tangling?
Before storing your necklace, close the clasp. Then place the necklace in a small ziplock bag, with the clasp and about an inch of chain on each side sticking out. Seal the bag with the chain mostly inside. Store one necklace per bag to keep it tangle-free.
What makes NIXIN opal necklaces unique?
Each NIXIN opal is hand-selected for its idiosyncratic beauty—color, light, texture, and movement that feel otherworldly. No two are alike. It’s a wearable piece of art and a testament to nature’s imagination.
